|
The Building Futures series consists of 24 manuals providing the material teachers need to make career education a major focus of their classroom instruction.
The manuals relate career issues to each of the six core subjects – Language Arts, Math, Social Studies, Science, Health & Physical Education and Arts and Music – for each of four grade levels – Lower Elementary, Upper Elementary, Middle School/Junior High and High School. The materials, which conforms to the National Academic Content Standards and coordinates with the standards of each state, includes:
- An introduction providing background on the Schools-to-Career (STC) movement and detailing the benefits of career education for K – 12 students
- Descriptions of the Multiple Intelligences (MI) theory and its application to standard academic and career-oriented curricula
- A developmentally appropriate career competency chart
- An Overview of the U.S. Labor Department’s SCANS skills and recommendations for their incorporation
- A list of Employability Skills to be developed within each of the six academic disciplines
- A chart of 125 occupations of 25 career clusters, with job descriptions, required skills and salary ranges
- Fifteen detailed lesson plan activities, linked directly to corresponding multiple intelligence and career competencies
- An extensive calendar of career-related events
Students and teachers using the Building Futures program have access to Syndistar’s FREE coordinating Web site – www.building-futures.com, which further enriches their instruction with updated internet resources, additional lesson plan activities, a message board for teachers, and student access to a wealth of online research material in the areas of interest.
