Life Skills Complete Videotape Library
Package

Syndistar’s Life Skills Complete Videotape Library offers teens a reference for solving problems faced by young people everyday.

Teens can explore a wide variety of hard-hitting topics with easy-to-read pamphlets that are discrete and small enough to fit in their pocket. The videos depict real teens discussing important issues and offering realistic solutions on topics including, self-esteem, job preparation, dating, and refusal skills.

Each video takes apart a subject area faced by teens. The first video, Teasing and Rumors, shows the student how to avoid teasing others and to deal with being teased themselves. They learn to walk away and tell someone, make a joke or stand up for themselves by turning the situation around. Young people learn that portraying confidence will help them when dealing with bullies.

In Communicating with Parents students realize the importance of their reactions. They learn to talk things out and get to a solution that both them and their parents can agree upon without arguing. The video also shows young people that communication is key if they want to receive more freedom and get to participate in activities they want to do.

In the Getting a Job film, students learn to access their own abilities and likes to match a job that would be right for them. They learn how to properly fill out an application or resume and to conduct themselves properly while on an interview. Teens learn how important gaining experience can be to their future.

Syndistar’s Refusal Skills video shows teens creative ways to say no without loosing their friends or respect from others. Students learn to change the subject, make an excuse, or just leave the situation. Suggestions are made for refusing a wide variety of subjects from drugs and sex to skipping class.

Young people are taught that Listening and Communicating Effectively are skills that everyone, no matter how old, need to obtain. Students learn to truly listen to someone when they speak. They are taught to give proper feedback by always reiterating what the speaker originally said to them. Body language is shown to be a very effective form of communication.

Creating a healthy outlet for anger is taught in the Dealing with Anger video. Students realize that it is okay to be angry but it is not all right to hurt others due to this feeling. Two narrators show them how to release these feelings properly through talking things out, writing them down or other forms of release. Young people learn that it is not healthy to hold all their emotions inside.

The power of positive thinking and a good outlook on life are depicted in the Improving Self-Esteem video. In this film students learn to evaluate what they are good at and dwell on those aspects of their lives rather than on the negative. Teens learn that by acting happy and surrounding themselves with good people and activities they will become more self-confident and it will be displayed in everything they do.

In the Abstinence video teens learn that they do not have to have sex until they are ready. They are given reasons to avoid sexual activity including teen pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections. Testimonies by teen parents show other young people the risks involved in having sex before it is right. Students learn to stand up for what they believe in and not to be afraid to say no.

The final video in the life skill curriculum deals with Making Good Decisions. Teens learn the importance of weighing all their options to come up with the best possible resolution for themselves. They learn to take action with five simple steps toward making good decisions. Like all the videos in this package, it is short and attention grabbing in a language and format to which high school students can relate.

Each of the videos comes with a correlating mini-book and poster to help keep the important life skills messages at the finger tips of teens. The quick references make it easy for young people to share what they learned with their friends and family member.
